Burns's full statement can be read below:
After 34 years of service in education, 33 of which have been here in Monterey County, I am proud to officially announce my candidacy for Monterey County Superintendent of Schools.
I began my career in education simply as a means to earn a living to support my family. From that humble purpose grew the passion to be a Champion for supporting students along their educational journey. That commitment to students took me from a campus supervisor all the way to serving as the superintendent of the largest district in our county. Through my journey I’ve had the honor of being a classified employee, teacher, principal, and district leader. In each role I remained focused on one purpose: ensuring every student has the access and opportunities they deserve.
As was previously reported, I experienced a health concern a couple of years ago that led to the decision to step away from my previous work. I want to assure you that has been fully addressed, and I am ready, energized, and committed to serve the students, families, and school districts of Monterey County.
My vision is clear: to create exemplary learning opportunities that prepare every student to be college, career, and life ready. Together, we can build a stronger, more equitable future for our county’s schools.
I look forward to earning your support and working alongside our community to ensure Monterey County is a place where all students thrive.
