Monterey COE speaks on back to school immigration resources

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) - As kids head back to school, Monterey County education leaders are addressing concerns about ramped-up federal immigration enforcement.

The Office of Education says so far, the school year is off to a good start countywide.

But anxiety remains a factor for families with mixed immigration status. 

He says staff across campuses are working hard to ensure that students feel safe and that schools feel inclusive, especially for kids in migrant education, Head Start, and similar programs.

"Our attendance rates have been pretty positive, and our schools have been checking in with families who not been coming just to see the reason and there are mixed reasons of course, travel, getting back into school. But for the misgivings in regard to immigration, we have seen a decent uptick in our attendance," said Deputy Superintendent of Monterey County Office of Education Ralph G. Porras.
