The Redman-Hirahara House loses Historic Place status

WATSONVILLE, Calif. (KION-TV) - The Redman-Hirahara House will be delisted from the National Registry of Historic Places after a 4-1 vote at the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors.

The house had been on the list since it first applied in 2004, but had been in a state of disrepair since then.

The house is named after two previous owners, James Redman and Fumio Hirahara, with Redman designing the house for his 81-acre orchard and Hirahara and the Hirahara family gaining ownership amid World War II.

The vote calls for the delisting of the home after a public hearing, with staff being guided to submit a resolution to the Office of Historic Preservation to delist the house.

The home would be delisted not only from the National Register, but from the California Register of Historical Resources.

The property owners will then have to place an ad in the local paper to offer the home for removal or dismantling. An architectural historian will be contacted to preserve items of historic value.
