Supervisor Luis Alejo submits for a future Alisal Arch project

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) - A new arch is set to be requested by Monterey County Supervisor Luis Alejo for the East Salinas neighborhood of Alisal.

According to Supervisor Alejo, he fully supports the future Alisal Arch project in partnership with the City of Salinas, Salinas-area rotary clubs, and community donors.

"The construction of an iconic Alisal Arch will serve as a lasting tribute to the hardworking people, families, organizations, and small businesses that form the heart of East Salinas. This landmark will not only celebrate the community’s resilience and vibrant history, but also inspire greater neighborhood pride and unity," said Supervisor Alejo on his Facebook.

The beautification project would be constructed to serve as a landmark for the area with the arch in a similar design to the Salinas arch on Main Street in Old Town Salinas. The arch would display "El Alisal" along the arch.

The Alisal community was originally part of the unincorporated Monterey County, with a multicultural community ranging from Mexican to Filipino to Japanese and Chinese, and migrants from the Dust Bowl of Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas. On August 5, 1963, the community was annexed into Salinas after Alisal residents voted for it in June of 1963.

The referral for the request will be seen at the next Montrey County Board of Supervisors meeting on Aug. 5.
