New bike/pedestrian bridge opens on Chanticleer Avenue above Highway 1

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION-TV) - The Santa Cruz Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) is opening its bicycle and pedestrian bridge over Chanticleer Avenue.
The bridge is an alternative way for bicyclists and those walking or running to get across the highway instead of using the Soquel or 41st interchanges.
It is the final part of the Highway 1 Auxiliary Lane and Bus-on-Shoulder Project between 41st Avenue and Soquel Drive to be completed. The bridge itself cost $34 million, with funding from local Measure D.
“The opening of this bridge represents a major step forward in improving transportation safety, access, and equity in our community,” said RTC Executive Director Sarah Christensen. “This bridge provides a vital connection between people, neighborhoods, and opportunities.”
A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the completion of the project will take place on July 30 at the West Marina Center from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
