MPUSD awarded $500K for civic engagment in school curriculum
MONTEREY, Calif (KION) - A $500,000 civic engagement grant was awarded to the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District from the California Department of Education.
The grant is said to “expand access to meaningful service learning experiences that support civic engagement and help students earn the State Seal of Civic Engagement.”
The state seal recognizes California public school students who demonstrate excellence in civics education and participation, with an understanding of the United States and California Constitutions, and the democratic system of government.
Through the grant, the district will expand opportunities by embedding service learning into the current curriculum. This will be achieved by supporting teachers through professional development, equipping them with the proper tools, and hiring a dedicated project coordinator to oversee the implementation.
“This grant is a powerful investment in our students, educators, and community,” Cresta McIntosh, Associate Superintendent of Educational Services said in a statement. “By integrating service learning into our high school curriculum, we’re not only enhancing instruction but also cultivating student agency, civic identity, and community connection.”
The program is expected to impact more than 800 seniors per year between 2025 and 2028.
The grant period spans from May 2025 through June 2027.
