Deputies: child safe after attempted kidnapping in Castroville

COUNTY OF MONTEREY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The Monterey County Sheriff's Office said a suspect was arrested for an alleged kidnapping attempt on the 4th of July.

According to deputies, a 10-year old girl reported being grabbed while walking home from a park at about 8 PM.

Family members detained the suspect, who grabbed the child's wrist and offered her a bicycle as he tried to take her. The child was able to pull away from the suspect and ran home to tell her family, who located the suspect and held him down until deputies arrived. The girl was not hurt in the incident and was reunited safely with her family, according to deputies.

“Protecting our most vulnerable remains a top priority of our office. As witnessed by our community members’ quick actions, they too showed their commitment to holding those looking to do harm accountable. There are not enough thank yous in the world for those who stepped in to help save this child,” said Sheriff Tina Nieto.

The suspect has been identified as 61-year old Salvador Hernandez-Saldivar. He was arrested and booked into Monterey County jail on the following charges: kidnapping, assault with intent to commit a felony, child endangerment, and annoying/molesting a minor under 18. Bail has been set at $200,000.
