Monterey County Student headed to National Spelling Bee

A local elementary school student is headed to the nation's capitol to compete in the 100th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. Seren Kim, a 6th grader out of La Mesa Elementary School, beat out 23 other students at the local level back in March, getting her a place on the National Stage. Her winning word back in March was bibliopegist.

As champion, Kim got a $300 cash prize along with her ticket to Washington D.C. to compete with the best spellers in the country. The preliminary rounds begin on Tuesday, May 27th.

On the Scripps Spelling Bee website, Kim has listed a few of her interests to help her fans get to know her better ahead of the big competition. She says her favorite animal is the tiger, her favorite candy is dark chocolate, and her favorite school subject is, of course, lunch.
