New homeless camping limits may be coming to Monterey

MONTEREY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The City of Monterey is set to discuss plans to limit homeless camping in certain areas.

The Council will be looking to limit camping in recreation areas and public property such as greenbelts, parks and beaches.

The City suggests an amendment ordinance to prohibit camping on public property, sidewalks within two blocks of schools and camping within Cementerio El Encinal.

Another piece of the ordinance also bans camping near and in high and very high fire hazard zones as designated by the city.

Camps in areas will be given a warning once 30 days before any enforcement action is taken and a fine lower than other City Code violations.

Monterey's City Council will meet this Tuesday, March 4, to discuss the potential amendment.
