Pink Shirt Day promotes anti-bullying, kindness in the community

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Standing up to bullies and spreading kindness is the mood for Friday in Salinas on Pink Shirt Day.

Non-profit organization Harmony at Home is hosting the event at the Northridge Mall in Salinas with guests encouraged to wear pink shirts for the event.

The event raises awareness about bullying prevention and promotes kindness within the community with "Kindness Superheroes" as the main theme.

"Together, we can work to end bullying in our communities and create a safer, more inclusive environment for everyone," Harmony At Home President & Chief Executive Officier Julianne Leavy said.

Folkorico dancers, a live mariachi, and a drumline from the Alisal Union School District will lead a bullying prevention march.

Grants have poured in from Kaiser Permanente to Carmel Gives Fund providing $1,500 and $5,000 each.

Free books, masks, shirts, and capes will be given out to those in attendance while supplies last.

Salinas Mayor Dennis Donahue, Salinas Councilmembers Margeret D'Arrigo and Jose L. Barajas, and County of Monterey Supervisor Luis Alejo will present an official city declaration marking February 28 as Pink Shirt Day.

Pink Shirt Day will run at the Northridge Mall in Salinas from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on February 28.
