Pacific Grove overlooks new maps as it moves to district elections

PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. (KION) -- Pacific Grove is making strides in moving away from at-large elections to district elections, calling on the public for help.

The city is still a long way but so far, some boundaries are in mind for future elections.

Pacific Grove was one of many on the Central Coast facing a potential lawsuit if they didn't move to district elections.

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) who issued the threat of a lawsuit, says it would be more fair to voters to have elected officials who represent where they live rather than the current at-large elections.

To do so, the city has to be separated into districts whose lines were drawn out by Pacific Grove residents.

These are the maps currently favored by council members so far:

It's a process expected to take months. since the city has to divide itself into six districts to make it work.

More maps continue to be submitted with the City Council stating they would not stop at only five maps to overlook.

The next hearing regarding the draft maps selected will be held on February 24.
