LONDON (AP) — An advisory panel says the Church of England should create a fund of 1 billion pounds, or $1.27 billion, to address its historic links to slavery. That’s 10 times the amount the church previously set aside. An independent oversight group says the 100-million-pound fund announced last year is insufficient compared to “the moral sin and crime of African chattel enslavement.” The church says it accepts the group’s recommendations, including the 1 billion pound target. Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has promised to address the church’s “shameful past” of profiting from the 18th-century slave trade.
