Shelter: Officer blocks traffic, requests fire department help after spotting car fire in Santa Cruz

The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter said its animal control truck came across a vehicle fire Saturday.

The shelter said one of the officers was on the west side of Santa Cruz when they saw smoke coming out the front window of a parked car. The officer blocked traffic and called the fire department while a nearby resident used a garden hose to try to put out the flames.

The Santa Cruz Fire Department responded and put out the fire before it spread to other vehicles.

The shelter said it appears the car owner left batteries on the dashboard that were heated by the sun, and that sparked the fire.
