St. Thomas outscores San Diego 49-42 for 7th straight win

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Cade Sexauer threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth and Andrew McElroy scored three times to lead St. Thomas to a 49-42 win over San Diego on Saturday, the seventh-straight win for the Tommies.

Judd Erickson, who threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns, threw four straight incompletions after driving the Toreros from their 27 to St. Thomas 37, the last coming with 15 seconds to play.

Sexauer ran 14-yards for a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter to break a 35-35 tie. On the next possession for the Tommies (7-1, 5-0 Pioneer Football League), Sexauer connected with Wesley Juszczak for a 41-yard score.

San Diego (3-4, 2-2) responded with a 79-yard drive, capped by Erickson’s 17-yard touchdown to Michael Carner with 3:50 to play before getting the ball back with 55 seconds left.

The teams alternated touchdowns through three quarters, the biggest a 95-yard kickoff return by McElroy early in the second half.

Sexauer was 13 of 19 for 286 yards and Bryce Boyd threw a touchdown pass of 36 yards on his only attempt. Shawn Shipman ran for 105 yards and score for St. Thomas while McElroy caught seven passes for 200 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Re-Al Mitchell had nine catches for 147 yards and a TD for San Diego.
