Neighbors react to suspect in shooting ambush outside their Ben Lomond homes
BEN LOMOND, Calif. (KION) Santa Cruz County Sheriff Jim Hart said on Saturday night that the suspect in a shooting ambush, Steven Carrillo, has been taken into custody. And neighbors said they were around when it happened.
“Everybody was wrestling and a handgun flew,” neighbor Clara Ricabal said. “I almost stepped on the AR-15..and then the pipe bomb, I did see maybe five feet away from the suspect’s feet.”
Witnesses said they saw those weapons when other neighbors tackled Carrillo. And neighbors further from the scene said they heard gunshots, but they weren't sure the sounds were indicative of anything serious.
“You hear it all the time around here,” a neighbor said.
They said they didn't take the sounds too seriously at the time because nearby residents have recreational firearms.
“You’re out in, you know, no man’s land in some aspects because people have lots of property around here,” the neighbor said.
