King City seeks former Project Homekey site for homeless shelter

KING CITY, Calif. (KION) -- The County of Monterey is looking to help King City purchase a former Project Homekey site so that it can still become a permanent homeless shelter.

The site being looked at is the Days Inn located at 1130 Broadway Street.

The city says Shangri-La Industries severely mismanaged the property as it was acquired for Project Homekey. The Days Inn was then lost to foreclosure last year.

KION previously reported that Shangri-La was accused of misusing funds for three Homekey projects in Salinas.

The county is considering a $300k contribution towards the purchase. If approved, ownership would be transferred to the county's housing authority.

They intend to renovate the inn by converting it into 45 studio units for people who live in encampments along the Salinas River.

A temporary shelter was established for them at the Monarch Inn last year after the home-key project fell through.
